WELCOME TO COWEE POTTERY SCHOOL

A nonprofit organization in Franklin, NC dedicated to teaching people of all ages the enriching art of pottery.

Create with Clay

Cowee Pottery School is a nonprofit organization located in the historic Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center in the mountains of beautiful Franklin, North Carolina. We are run by a group of dedicated volunteers who specialize in teaching people of all ages the enriching art of pottery.

We offer affordable month long classes, perfect for the beginner or the pro. To see our current class list, click the button below. We keep the pottery studio open frequently throughout the week. Anyone enrolled in one of our classes can join us to practice and perfect their pottery skills during open studio at no extra charge. Day and times of open studio are listed, and while free to current students, we ask that you register so that we can keep you informed of schedule changes or cancellations to open studio times.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTONS

Do I need to have experience to take a class?

No experience is necessary. Most of our classes are very beginner friendly.

What equipment do I need to bring to class?

We sell basic tool kits at Cowee Pottery School. We'll go over other helpful tools you might want during class. Your tool box can always grow and expand.

What should I wear?

One of the best parts of pottery is getting muddy and messy. We recommend wearing comfortable, old clothing. You may also want to keep your nails short.

Who are the teachers?

All of Cowee Pottery School's classes are taught by experienced potters, all of whom are volunteering their time. We have two Master Potters, Doug Hubbs and Hank Shuler, who teach many of the classes.

Have the childrens' teachers had background checks?

We get background checks of anyone who will be working with kids. Our pottery classes for kids are all taught by former educators.

What is hand building?

This is not the ceramic green ware pottery you might be familiar with. Hand building pottery involves rolling slabs of clay and sculpting the clay into pieces you are creating. It is making a unique piece of pottery from scratch.
